The Women Peace and Leadership (WPL) Program is an intiative of the Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies at the National University of Timor Leste (UNTL). The program was developed in response to the observation of then president Xanana Gusmao, that many young women didn’t have the confidence and skills to express their opinions and ideas about civil society, largely due to existing cultural mores of gender inequality. To address this concern, WPL is a training program to promote gender equality and human rights; led by young women and open to both men and women participants.
In February 2017, ACHRE sponsored the provision of fifty Citizen for Humanity certificates to graduates in the WPL program. In the words of participants: “[we are] so happy to have this certificate, thank you ACHRE”.
