Australia-Iran Human Rights Dialogue Civil Society Consultation Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT)

1 August 2018

(Report by Chander Khera)

Mr Chander Khera of ACHRE along with other members of civil society attended a meeting with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) on the forthcoming Australia-Iran Human Rights Dialogue. The dialogue will be held on 20 August 2018.

DFAT advised that Australia and Iran have a longstanding bilateral relation with 17% increase in trade in the last year. Despite the constructive relationship, Australia is deeply concerned about human rights in Iran, in particular death penalty, minorities and immigrants’ rights and operation of justice and judiciary in Iran. Nonetheless, Australia considers the dialogue a two-way exchange of human rights issues and a tool of constructive engagement between the two countries.
