Building Peace Together: Inclusive and Sustainable Societies in Asia (Peace Boat, Japan)

18 September 2018

(Report by Lynda Blanchard)

Dr Lynda Blanchard of ACHRE collaborates with colleagues from the Peace Boat’s Global University Special Programme concerning the development of an international course to promote regional human rights and peace education which will run from August 31 to September 18, 2018.

This Global University (99th Global Voyage) includes a 19-day intensive course on “Building Peace Together: Inclusive and Sustainable Societies in Asia”. Participating students will visit five cities in four countries, namely Hiroshima (Japan), Xiamen (China), Singapore, and Siem Reap and Phnom Penh (Cambodia).
Underpinning this year’s programme is the Goal 16 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): “Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.”

Global University takes place during Peace Boat’s Global Voyages as a two- to three-week long intensive course, that combines exposure programmes (field visits) on land and seminars onboard to address a range of regional and global issues. The programme aims to nurture future leaders by equipping them with the knowledge, means, and experience to actively engage in the work of non-government organizations, international bodies, and local activism to promote human rights and peace.
