March 1-14, 2021.

The Australian Council for Human Rights Education (ACHRE) has been a collaborative partner in the project Investigating Diversity, Human Rights and Civil Society in Japan and Australia for the past eight years following pilot funding from the Australia-Japan Foundation. Our international partner is Chuo University Japan and students travel to Sydney on an annual basis to meet with government, community and civil society organisations concerned with project themes.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, this two-week study abroad project was run online with collaborative partners and guest speakers including: The University of Sydney with Dr Leah Lui-Chivizhe’s research on Torres Strait Island turtle mask culture and Prof. Lyn Riley’s Aboriginal Kinship Workshop; The University of New South Wales with director of the Australian Human Rights Institute Prof. Justine Nolan and Dr. Bridget Haire, ALLY Network; civil society programmes such as  Benjamin Oh’s LGBTIQ+ Workshop and the Refugee Art Project; community leaders with non-government organisations such as Maha from the Muslim Women’s Association (Australia) and Leny from Kalakasan (Japan); as well as human rights initiatives from Auburn Community Centre (Sydney) and Chuo University’s Diversity Centre (Tokyo); Community Hub (Mt Druitt) and Cabramatta High School.
