Making Racism Invisible

“As we celebrate NAIDOC Week, I wanted to share the Northern Territory Anti-Discrimination Commission’s recent submission to the Joint Standing Committee on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs’ Inquiry into Racism, Hate and Violence against First Nations People, titled Making Racism Invisible.”  Jeswynn Yogaratnam, NT Anti-Discrimination Commission and ACHRE Advisor.

…The submission explores how racism can become normalised, minimised or rendered invisible within institutions, and argues that addressing racism requires more than responding to individual incidents. It calls for stronger truth telling, independent accountability, Positive Duty, cultural safety and systemic reform to prevent discrimination before it occurs. The report also reflects on the unique experience of the Northern Territory, drawing on the Commission’s observations as an independent statutory body on growing perceptions on prevalence of racism.

I hope it contributes to the national conversation on human rights education and anti-racism. As educators, we know that lasting change begins with increasing understanding, building capability and creating the conditions for people to challenge discrimination before it becomes entrenched.”
